The Pekoe Trail exists because of the people who look after it. Your Trail Pass pays for the maintenance, signage, app and community programmes that keep it walkable, and it’s what lets us look after you on the trail.
Registered hikers can be identified and contacted if there’s an incident or a risk on their stage. That’s the practical value of a pass, and it’s only possible if you register.
The Pekoe Trail is open to all, and the pass isn’t an entry fee, as The Pekoe Trail Company doesn’t own the land the trail crosses. But the trail only stays this good if those who walk it make the Trail Pass contribution. Please get your pass before you set out.
The Pekoe Trail was originally developed with donor support. With the funding phase now complete, The Pekoe Trail Company (Guarantee) Limited has taken on the responsibility of managing, maintaining and promoting the trail as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
The Pekoe Trail Company (Guarantee) Limited, works in consultation with a Government Steering Committee established in November 2025 and chaired by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Tourism. The Committee brings together ministries, government agencies and tourism industry associations and provides guidance and facilitates coordination with relevant government institutions to support the continued development, management and long-term sustainability of The Pekoe Trail.

Recognition as someone who’s helping sustain Sri Lanka’s most iconic trail
The Pekoe Trail weaves through 21 tea estates and multiple villages, offering hikers an intimate look into Sri Lanka’s rural life. A key responsibility of every visitor is to tread respectfully. We ask every walker to follow these guidelines to ensure a positive experience for both hikers and local communities:
Respect private property and adhere to estate regulations.
Minimize environmental impact by carrying reusable water bottles and disposing of waste properly.
Follow the rules of landowners and park authorities. At Horton Plains National Park, the Department of Wildlife Conservation charges its own entry ticket, which your trail contribution does not cover.
Support local businesses whether by staying at a homestay, dining at a village eatery, or hiring a community guide.
We’d love to see your trail moments. If you’re hiking with a trail pass, tag @thepekoetrailofficial and use the hashtag #MyPekoeTrail to share your experience. It’s a small way to inspire others and grow the community of responsible hikers who believe in what this trail stands for.
